Christmas is coming! Count down with our Advent Calendar!

Christmas is almost upon us and, here at Breakfast In A Bag we are counting down to the big day with our very own advent calendar! Remember to check back each day to see what is revealed behind each digital door and share with your friends, so we can help spread the #TeamBIAB word as far and wide as possible, especially over the Season of Goodwill!

Advent Calendars past and present
Advent, which is derived from the Latin word meaning “coming”, actually starts on the nearest Sunday to the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle, which is November 30 (“the First Sunday in Advent”). It’s origins lay in Christianity, with Christian converts anticipating the time for Baptism but more recently, since the early 19th Century, it has taken the form of a paper or card calendar, marking the days from the 1st to the 24th of December in anticipation of the anniversary of Christ’s birth, Christmas Day.

Advent calendar windows would open to reveal little images of Christmas related items, poems, sayings, and toys, until the idea of a little chocolate treat became popular! People are becoming more creative with the contents of their Advent Calendars as time passes, and it’s it’s becoming increasingly common to see home made Advent Calendars containing little toys and treats, and even little bottles of tipple for the grown-ups!

We hope you enjoy our little Advent Calendar that we have shared with everyone. As we cannot find a way to share it directly with our homeless friends we have included them by thinking of their needs and treats, not just in the run up to Christmas but all year round, so hopefully there is a little something for everyone concealed behind the doors!
